One of the Important Tools That Lead Us to Success: Self-Efficacy

We know that self-belief is important in achieving the goals we set for ourselves in life, in finishing the things we do. This belief, which can be quite critical in our business and educational life, is actually called self-efficacy.

Since self-efficacy is a condition that can affect almost every area of our life, acquiring this skill can take us to the point we want in our life. In today’s article, we will examine self-efficacy and discuss its importance.

What is Self-Efficacy?

The self-efficacy theory developed by Albert Bandura is the belief that a person can do a job successfully and believes that he has the knowledge and skills necessary for that job. It is also possible to define it as the confidence that individuals have in their abilities for that job or task. Self-efficacy is not the same for all people for every job and can vary at different levels (Arseven, 2016).

When evaluating our self-efficacy, we consider three different dimensions:

Level of Self-Efficacy:

This dimension describes the level of difficulty a person will face when starting a job. Whether the job is easy, medium or difficult is included in this dimension.

The Power of Self-Sufficiency:

This dimension defines a person’s belief about whether he can achieve the job he started. It refers to the performance that the person thinks they will show.

Generalizability of Self-Efficacy:

This dimension describes the extent to which a person’s expectations of competence in a task can be generalized to different situations (Arseven, 2016).

Why is Self-Efficacy Important?

Self-efficacy, as we have mentioned before, stands out as a very important concept for us because it affects many areas of our life. Below we have listed the points where it is important:

  1. It helps to collect our motivation.
Self-efficacy is important in providing motivation and allows us to start doing the things we need to do.

  2. It can make us successful.
When our self-efficacy is high, we put in more effort because we believe that we will succeed in a job, thus increasing our chances of success. In this case, we can have a better business and educational life.

  3. It can make us more entrepreneurial.
When our self-efficacy is high, we are more willing to start a new business.

  4. It can make us more resilient in the face of difficulties.
Self-efficacy can increase our perseverance and patience. When our self-efficacy is high, we can overcome the difficulties we face while working more easily. We do not give up easily (Kurbanoğlu, 2004).

Where Does Your Self-Sufficiency Get Resources From?

Experiences We Have Gained:

A person’s successes and positive experiences are an important source for the development of self-efficacy. A person may believe that he/she can be successful in similar situations thanks to his/her successes. On the other hand, negative experiences can have the opposite effect and lead to a decrease in self-efficacy.

What We Learn by Observing Others’ Experiences:

In addition to a person’s own experiences, other people’s experiences are also effective in developing their self-efficacy. Seeing other people succeed in doing a job can increase our self-efficacy by strengthening our belief that we will be successful in that job as well. Their negative experiences, on the other hand, can negatively affect our self-efficacy by strengthening the belief that we will also have negative experiences. Since we may tend to model on people who look like us, their experiences can be an important resource for our self-efficacy.

Verbal Persuasion:

Positive encouragement from others before starting a task can positively affect self-efficacy. Unrealistic, ungrounded encouragement can negatively affect self-efficacy rather than positively affecting it. Negative incentives and discouraging discourse also negatively affect self-efficacy.

Our Psychological State:

The psychological state before starting a task can also affect a person’s self-efficacy. A happy, relaxed, positive mood can increase a person’s self-efficacy. A depressed, hopeless mood can negatively affect self-efficacy (Arseven, 2016).

How Does Self-Efficacy Increase?

There are some steps that can be taken to increase self-efficacy. Although self-efficacy needs to be developed separately for each area, it is also important to develop the general self-efficacy perception. Below, we have listed some steps we can take to improve self-efficacy:

  1. Experiences in which we have been successful in the past can be an important source for our self-efficacy. Reviewing these moments can contribute to the development of our self-efficacy and reinforce our belief in ourselves.

  2. You can request this from people around you who can give you positive encouragement, it can be a good source of motivation for you.

  3. You can try to put yourself in a positive mood so that your self-efficacy can increase.

Result

Self-efficacy is a theory developed by Albert Bandura and is the belief that a person can successfully complete a task. Self-efficacy is derived from past successful experiences, the experiences of other people observed, verbal persuasion and psychological state. When a person has high self-efficacy, he trusts his abilities related to that job, he faces the difficulties of the job more easily. He doesn’t give up easily, so the probability of success increases. Because of this, people with high self-efficacy are more successful in business and educational life.
