A Look At The Reflections Of Personality On Career From The Perspective Of The Five-Factor Personality Theory

Introduction

Personality is a concept that has a high impact on individuals’ lives. Individuals make most choices in their lives according to their personalities. Their aim in doing so is for the results of these choices to satisfy them. Career choice is among these choices, and making this choice in accordance with one’s personality can help individuals lead happier lives.

Five-Factor Personality Traits

The Five-Factor theory, developed by Costa and McCrae, is used in many fields (Tatlılıoğlu, 2013).

Extroversion: Extroverted individuals show themselves through their social, talkative, friendly, and cheerful characteristics. In cases of low extroversion, individuals are introverted and prefer solitude (Tatlılıoğlu, 2013).

Neuroticism: Also called emotional instability, individuals in this personality type experience intense feelings of worry, anger, and anxiety. They may act without thinking and experience conflict with others. In cases of low neuroticism, individuals exhibit more composed and calm characteristics (Tatlılıoğlu, 2013).

Openness to Experience: Individuals open to experience stand out with their creative, adaptable, and curious traits (Tatlılıoğlu, 2013). Low neuroticism, however, manifests as a preference for order and a reluctance to change.

Agreeableness: Agreeable individuals get along better with others, are cooperative, and are good at communication (Tatlılıoğlu, 2013). They are tolerant, well-intentioned, and polite. Agreeable individuals, on the other hand, are closed to cooperation, irritable, and rude.

Responsibility: Responsibility manifests itself through discipline, planning, organization, diligence, and attentiveness (Tatlılıoğlu, 2013). Low responsibility, however, manifests itself as carelessness and low anxiety in achieving goals.

The Influence Of Personality On Career Choice

  • Personalities of Those Working in Routine Jobs: Individuals working in professions that require following a specific daily routine tend to exhibit less extroversion, openness to experience, and neuroticism (Demirgil and Erdem, 2019). This suggests that introverted, order-loving, calm, and composed individuals are more likely to choose these professions. Responsibility can also be observed in individuals working in technical jobs.

  • Personalities of Those Working in Business and Management Fields: Those who choose to work in these fields tend to be more adaptable and extroverted (Demirgil and Erdem, 2019).

  • Personalities of Those Working in Social Professions: Individuals who choose professions such as medicine and teaching stand out with their more extroverted characteristics (Demirgil and Erdem, 2019). Teachers may also exhibit openness to experience and adaptability. Doctors, on the other hand, have low neuroticism and high levels of responsibility, adaptability, and openness to experience (Demirgil and Erdem, 2019).

  • Personalities of Employees in Sales and Marketing Fields: Employees in these fields exhibit significantly more extroverted, open-minded, and emotionally stable characteristics compared to others (Demirgil and Erdem, 2019).

The Impact Of Personality On Career Adaptability

Career Adaptability: Extraversion, conscientiousness, openness to experience, emotional stability, and responsibility positively influence career adaptability (Sartık and Ballı, 2020). Agreeableness, however, has no effect on career adaptability (Sartık and Ballı, 2020).

Work Experience: In workplace experience, neuroticism and extraversion have a greater impact than others (Demirgil and Erdem, 2019). Neuroticism negatively affects a person’s energy in the workplace, while extraversion has a positive effect (Bayram, Demirtaş, and Karaca, 2019).

Conclusion

Personality emerges as a concept that helps explain individuals’ behavioral patterns and choices. Since career choice is an important decision in people’s lives, it is important to make it carefully and consciously. Personality also has a significant impact on career performance, so it is important to consider it. The Five Factor is a personality theory used by individuals and organizations. The dimensions of the five factors show compatibility with various professions.
