Most psychological phenomena enter public awareness through a predictable path. Researchers identify a condition, clinicians develop diagnostic criteria, professional organizations publish guidelines, and eventually the concept reaches the public through textbooks, media coverage, and healthcare systems. Maladaptive Daydreaming (MD) followed a remarkably different trajectory.
First described by Israeli psychologist Eli Somer in 2002, maladaptive daydreaming refers to extensive, immersive fantasy activity that becomes difficult to control and interferes with daily functioning (Somer, 2002). More than twenty years later, however, MD remains absent from both the DSM-5 and ICD-11. Despite this lack of formal recognition, the concept has accumulated a substantial scientific literature, inspired international research collaborations, and attracted large online communities consisting of tens of thousands of self-identified maladaptive daydreamers.
The story of maladaptive daydreaming is therefore not only a story about a psychological phenomenon. It is also a story about science communication. The growth of MD demonstrates how scientific ideas can spread outside traditional institutional channels and how patients, researchers, online communities, and science communicators can collectively shape an emerging field.
When Somer published Maladaptive Daydreaming: A Qualitative Inquiry in 2002, he described six individuals whose elaborate fantasy lives had become psychologically impairing (Somer, 2002). The article attracted interest among a small number of clinicians but remained relatively unknown to the broader public.
In many ways, MD was in an unusual position. It had a name and an initial scientific description, yet it lacked the institutional support that usually accompanies a psychological diagnosis. There were no treatment guidelines, no diagnostic manuals recognizing it, and very few professionals familiar with the concept.
As a result, the dissemination of information about maladaptive daydreaming occurred largely outside conventional medical channels. Rather than being introduced to MD by clinicians, many individuals first encountered the concept through online searches. People who had spent years believing they were alone discovered descriptions that closely matched their experiences. For many, reading Somer’s work felt less like learning about a disorder and more like finding a long-awaited explanation.
This dynamic would fundamentally shape the future of MD science communication. Few psychological concepts owe as much of their visibility to the internet as maladaptive daydreaming. In the early 2000s and 2010s, online forums became gathering places for individuals who experienced excessive daydreaming. Long before major institutions discussed the phenomenon, people were already exchanging stories, comparing symptoms, and sharing coping strategies.
Unlike conditions such as depression or anxiety, which have long histories in psychiatry, maladaptive daydreaming was essentially born into the digital age. Its earliest communities developed online, allowing individuals from different countries to recognize common experiences despite having no formal diagnosis. This created a unique communication ecosystem.
Researchers provided scientific descriptions. Community members translated those descriptions into personal narratives. Science communicators transformed research findings into accessible language. Together, these groups built awareness faster than traditional mental health institutions could.
Today, online communities dedicated to maladaptive daydreaming exist on Reddit, Discord, Facebook, YouTube, and independent forums. For many people, these communities function as the first point of contact with the concept. The rise of social media further accelerated public awareness.
Platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Reddit enabled individuals to share personal experiences with maladaptive daydreaming on an unprecedented scale. Videos discussing immersive fantasy, fictional characters, repetitive movements, music-triggered daydreaming, and difficulties concentrating often reached audiences far larger than academic articles. This phenomenon reflects a broader trend in science communication: the democratization of knowledge production.
Traditionally, information flowed from researchers to institutions and then to the public. In the case of maladaptive daydreaming, however, individuals experiencing the phenomenon became active communicators themselves. They produced explanatory videos, wrote blog posts, participated in interviews, and discussed emerging research findings.
Such grassroots communication has both strengths and weaknesses. On one hand, it allows people to access information that may not yet be available through healthcare systems. On the other hand, it increases the risk of misinformation, oversimplification, and self-diagnosis without professional evaluation. The challenge for science communicators is therefore not simply to increase awareness but to increase accurate awareness.
One of the most significant communication challenges surrounding maladaptive daydreaming is self-diagnosis. Because MD lacks formal diagnostic recognition, many individuals identify themselves based on online descriptions rather than clinical assessments. This phenomenon is not unique to MD, but it is particularly pronounced in this field.
Science communication plays a paradoxical role here. Effective communication allows people to recognize patterns in their own experiences and seek support. Yet the same communication can encourage individuals to interpret unrelated symptoms through the lens of maladaptive daydreaming.
For example, symptoms associated with ADHD, obsessive-compulsive disorder, dissociation, anxiety disorders, or depression may overlap with aspects of excessive daydreaming. Without careful communication, distinctions between these conditions can become blurred. Responsible science communication therefore requires nuance. Communicators must emphasize that recognizing oneself in a description does not necessarily constitute a diagnosis. Instead, scientific information should be presented as a tool for understanding experiences rather than replacing professional evaluation.
An important feature of the MD field is the unusually active role researchers have played in public communication. Eli Somer and his colleagues have not limited their work to academic journals. They have participated in interviews, podcasts, webinars, public presentations, and educational initiatives designed for non-specialist audiences.
The creation of the International Consortium for Maladaptive Daydreaming Research (ICMDR) further strengthened communication efforts by bringing researchers together under a common framework. More recently, the International Society for Maladaptive Daydreaming (ISMD) has expanded public outreach through educational resources, community engagement, and awareness campaigns.
These organizations illustrate how scientific communication can become an integral part of research itself rather than merely an afterthought. In emerging fields, communication is not simply about reporting findings. It is often necessary for generating awareness, recruiting participants, attracting funding, and establishing legitimacy.
Maladaptive daydreaming also provides an example of citizen participation in science. Many studies recruit participants directly from online communities. In some cases, community members help disseminate surveys, discuss findings, and provide feedback regarding research priorities.
This creates a feedback loop rarely seen in more established psychological fields. Individuals experiencing MD contribute data to researchers. Researchers publish findings. Science communicators interpret those findings. Community members then discuss and distribute the information, which in turn supports future research recruitment.
Such interactions blur the traditional boundary between researchers and research participants. Rather than passive subjects, community members become active stakeholders in the development of scientific knowledge.
More than two decades after its introduction, maladaptive daydreaming remains a developing area of psychological science. Yet its impact extends beyond research findings and clinical debates. The history of MD demonstrates how scientific ideas can spread through digital networks, online communities, and public engagement. It shows how individuals can become participants in knowledge production and how communication can influence the trajectory of an entire field.
In many ways, maladaptive daydreaming represents a new model of scientific dissemination—one in which researchers, communicators, and community members collectively shape understanding. As the field continues to evolve, its greatest contribution may not only be what it teaches us about daydreaming but also what it teaches us about communicating science in the digital age.
