Not Prone To Crime, Raising Healthy Generations

Nowadays, we often come across similar news. The involvement of individuals under 18 in various criminal behaviors appears continuously in the media and on social networks. Unfortunately, this situation can sometimes go as far as taking someone’s life. As a society, such news deeply concerns us. How has it become so common for such young individuals to engage in these kinds of crimes today?

The purpose of this article is not to justify the serious criminal behaviors committed by these children. The main goal is to discuss how parents and society today can take preventive measures before such behaviors emerge in children. Understanding the psychological reasons behind a child choosing this path and offering alternative options is the main focus of this article. The greatest responsibility to prevent such behaviors in children and adolescents lies with parents and adults. Being a conscious parent is crucial in this regard.

Social Learning Theory

Bandura’s social learning theory argues that learning occurs largely by observing other people around us. Individuals can learn behaviors not only through direct experience but also by watching others and observing the outcomes of their actions. According to this theory, reinforcement, imitation, and modeling play an important role in the learning process. In short, the theory states: “Children learn not only what is said but also what is seen.”

Considering this approach, criminal behavior can also be seen as a type of behavior learned by observing others. Being frequently around individuals prone to crime provides a suitable environment for these behaviors to be reinforced and imitated. Especially in younger individuals, these learning processes can happen much faster.

Here, parents have significant responsibilities. First, it is very important for parents to serve as healthy and positive role models for their children. Family is the smallest unit of society, and many positive or negative behaviors are learned first within the family environment.

Another important factor is the peer group and social environment of children. Children may encounter various behavioral patterns at school or within their friends, which they can gradually adopt. While parents cannot always fully control this process, monitoring their children’s environment as much as possible and teaching them right from wrong is important. Guiding children in this process without harming their self-esteem is essential.

Finally, another highly influential factor today is the widespread use of social media and the internet. The internet has become easily accessible to many children, but it can also expose them to negative behaviors, which they may learn. Therefore, it is important for parents to guide their children consciously in digital spaces and closely monitor their online activity.

Early Experiences And Attachment Theory

Another important factor in children’s tendency toward criminal behavior is early life experiences. Especially in early childhood, trauma, neglect, violence, and unsafe family environments can negatively affect children’s psychological development. These experiences can create difficulties in emotion regulation, making it harder to express anger, fear, or frustration in a healthy way.

At this point, it is important to mention John Bowlby’s attachment theory. According to Bowlby, the bond between a child and the caregiver plays a very important role in the child’s future development. Children who cannot develop a secure attachment may struggle to trust others and to develop empathy. This can sometimes manifest as behavioral problems and difficulties in social adjustment.

Prevention

Early detection of these behaviors is very important. Parents noticing changes in their child’s behavior and intervening appropriately can have significant positive effects. Seeking psychological support and consulting with experts is highly important.

Similarly, guidance and psychological counseling services provided in schools play a crucial role in identifying difficulties early and providing the necessary support. Alongside parents and schools, society also has important responsibilities. All segments of society are responsible for creating an environment that supports thehealthy development of children, and being aware of this is very important.

Conclusion

Parents and society carry significant responsibilities in this matter. As members of society, we should strive to become as informed as possible. It must be remembered that trying to understand a behavior does not mean justifying it. On the contrary, understanding the reasons behind a problem is one of the most important steps in preventing it. No psychological explanation justifies criminal behavior; however, understanding how these behaviors arise provides valuable insights for preventing them. As a society, our goal should not be to raise individuals inclined toward crime but to raise psychologically healthy and well-adjusted adults.
