With AI: How Does It Affect the Human Brain and Mental Health?

“While we used to spend hours gathering information, today we can find answers to a single question in seconds. So how is this changing our minds and psychology?”

Change Begins With a Question

When we have a question, most of us no longer open a book or conduct in-depth research. Instead, we ask artificial intelligence and receive an answer within seconds. Recently, rapidly developing artificial intelligence technologies have begun to transform not only the ways we learn and work but also the way we think and our overall mental health. So, how does this technological power affect human psychology?

Artificial intelligence refers to technology that mimics human-like decision-making, learning, and problem-solving processes. Particularly in recent years, the widespread adoption of generative AI applications has significantly increased individuals’ interaction with technology (Russell & Norvig, 2021).

The Effects of Artificial Intelligence on Our Psychology

Today, artificial intelligence is used in many areas, from education and healthcare to business and daily life. People can now quickly access the information they need and use their time more efficiently. This simplifies daily life while also reducing cognitive load.

However, from a psychological perspective, there are also some risks. The human brain develops through research, experience, and questioning during the learning process. The rapid acquisition of information through artificial intelligence may, over time, negatively affect an individual’s critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Research suggests that excessive dependence on the digital world can have negative effects on attention processes and cognitive performance (Carr, 2020).

In recent years, it has been observed that many people regularly interact with chatbots and use these systems for emotional support. Some users report that talking without fear of judgment is comforting and makes them feel better. Especially in today’s world, where loneliness is becoming increasingly common, AI-powered programs can provide a temporary sense of social support.

Furthermore, it should not be forgotten that technological systems cannot completely replace face-to-face human relationships. The foundation of human relationships rests on empathy, mutual understanding, and emotional connection. Although artificial intelligence can imitate these qualities, it cannot truly experience or feel them. It has also been noted that constant digital interaction may increase distraction and weaken face-to-face communication skills (Levitin, 2015).

Artificial Intelligence in Education, Work, and Mental Health

Artificial intelligence is also having significant effects on education and employment. Students use these tools while preparing assignments, and employees use them when writing reports or making plans. This undoubtedly saves time, but discussions continue about whether it may negatively affect individual productivity and learning. Attempting to complete a task independently allows individuals to engage more deeply with the learning process.

When artificial intelligence is relied upon excessively, the process of accessing information becomes shorter, which may gradually alter learning habits over time. For this reason, while artificial intelligence should be used as a valuable tool, individual creativity, productivity, and thinking skills should also be preserved.

On the other hand, artificial intelligence offers important opportunities in the field of mental health. Some applications help individuals track their mood daily and monitor emotional changes over time. Such tools are considered especially valuable in regions where access to psychological support services is limited.

However, it is important to remember that artificial intelligence cannot replace professional psychological support. Mental health is a complex field built upon empathy, trust, therapeutic relationships, and human connection. Therefore, while AI can be a valuable aid, the role of mental health professionals remains indispensable.

I believe that hybrid support models, where mental health professionals and artificial intelligence work together, will become increasingly common in the future.

Being Human in the Future

Artificial intelligence will continue to develop rapidly in the coming years. Therefore, the most important issue is not whether AI will advance, but how we choose to interact with it. Using technology consciously, strengthening authentic social connections, and preserving our critical thinking skills are among the essential requirements of the new digital age.

In conclusion, artificial intelligence is undoubtedly a powerful technology that offers numerous opportunities and makes life easier. However, it is crucial to view this technology as a tool rather than becoming overly dependent on it. Protecting our cognitive abilities, maintaining our mental well-being, and preserving the qualities that make us human will remain just as important as technological advancement itself.

I believe that success in the future will depend not only on our ability to use technology but also on our ability to preserve the fundamental qualities of being human.
