Peer bullying is defined as behaviors, particularly among children in school settings, that cause physical, verbal, or psychological harm to peers who are perceived as weaker, carried out continuously and intentionally. This phenomenon negatively affects the psychosocial development of both the victim and the perpetrator and, in some cases, may create a foundation for criminal behavior. Prolonged bullying can adversely impact emotional development and contribute to the emergence of criminal acts.

Types Of Bullying

Types of bullying can be classified as follows: physical bullying (pushing, hitting, sexual harassment), verbal bullying (insults, mocking), social bullying (exclusion), and cyberbullying (via the internet).

The Effects Of Peer Bullying and Abuse

The effects of peer bullying and abuse on individuals today are significant. Children and adolescents who experience bullying may develop high levels of stress, anxiety, anger, loneliness, and feelings of worthlessness. While some may respond by withdrawing socially, experiencing depression, and losing self-confidence, others may develop behavioral problems such as aggression and difficulty controlling anger. Bullying that begins at an early age may continue into adolescence; even if it does not, experiences of feeling inadequate, being humiliated, or abused may indirectly contribute to criminal behavior.

Long-Term Effects

The long-term effects of peer bullying are not limited to childhood or adolescence. These experiences can affect an individual’s social relationships, self-esteem, and psychological health in adulthood. Victims of prolonged bullying may display post-traumatic stress symptoms, feelings of insecurity, and social withdrawal. Similarly, individuals who engage in bullying may exhibit a lack of empathy, normalization of aggressive behavior, and difficulties adhering to societal rules. Therefore, peer bullying should be considered not only as an individual problem but also as a societal issue.

Factors Influencing Juvenile Delinquency

Juvenile delinquency can be influenced by family, environment, school, and psychological factors. Peer-related influences can manifest in several ways: theft resulting from material exclusion or feelings of inadequacy, aggression arising from verbal or physical bullying, and risky behaviors such as substance or alcohol use stemming from a desire to prove oneself. Family violence, parental neglect, lack of discipline or overly harsh discipline, unmonitored school environments, insufficient teacher intervention, lack of empathy development, untreated anger management problems, low social skills, forced adherence to rigid gender norms, low socio-economic status, and poor-quality education are among the factors that can contribute to delinquent behavior. These factors may cause bullying behaviors to develop into persistent aggressive actions.

Perceptions Of The Perpetrator

Perpetrators of bullying often perceive violence as a means of demonstrating power or solving problems. Over time, this behavior may become an integral part of their personality, leading them to continue exhibiting aggressive behaviors to gain power in social relationships.

Risk Of Future Criminal Acts

Research shows that children who consistently engage in bullying during childhood are at a higher risk of committing criminal acts in later life. These individuals are more likely to display aggression, vandalism, rule violations, and violent behaviors. If bullying behaviors are not detected and addressed early, they may become persistent and negatively affect social adaptation.

According to Gasser & Keller (2009):

  • Children who engage in bullying are highly aggressive toward others but are usually not victims of violence themselves.

  • Bullying victims may be aggressive toward peers while also experiencing violence from others.

  • Some victims remain passive and do not retaliate against aggression.

  • Prosocial children demonstrate positive behaviors such as sharing, helping, consoling, and showing empathy.

Erosion Of Trust In The School Environment

Another negative effect of peer bullying is the erosion of trust in the school environment. Children may lose confidence and motivation in school if they experience physical or emotional abuse in a setting where they should feel safe and trust their teachers. Children who experience such situations at a young age may also find it difficult to communicate with their parents, which can undermine foundational trust. They may believe that even parents cannot protect them, potentially leading to attachment issues later in life.

Prevention and Intervention Strategies

Prevention and intervention strategies for peer bullying include school-based bullying prevention programs and seminars, free or mandatory psychological counseling services when necessary, parent education, and social skills development programs.

In conclusion, there is a significant relationship between peer bullying and juvenile delinquency. Both victims and perpetrators are more likely to encounter criminal behavior later in life. Therefore, early intervention and raising awareness among parents, teachers, and society regarding peer bullying are crucial.
