Sometimes life weighs you down so much that it’s hard to even breathe. You’ve done your best, tried over and over again, and finally given up. At that moment, that familiar feeling surrounding you is learned helplessness. You begin to believe that no matter what you do, it won’t work—that every step you take will hit a wall.

But stop. This feeling is not your reality. It’s an illusion, a mental pattern you’ve been taught for years and have been unconsciously battling.

The concept of learned helplessness in psychology was first defined by Martin Seligman in experiments with dogs. Dogs that had no chance of escape from painful stimuli eventually stopped trying, even when opportunities to escape later appeared. The same happens with human psychology: once someone believes they are powerless, they may fail to recognize or act on new chances—even ones that could bring change.

That voice in your head saying, “You’re trying in vain,” is often just an echo from the past—from slammed doors, shattered dreams, and repeated disappointment. But remember: every new day demands a new version of you. And every time, you are more experienced, stronger, and more self-aware.

You don’t have to silence the voice—but you can argue with it.

Ask yourself:

  • “Why can’t I do this?”

  • “What is really stopping me?”

Most of the time, the answers are silent, because the obstacles are imaginary. Your brain wants to keep you safe by avoiding risks—but that same brain also forms mental patterns that sabotage your success.

Your greatest strength is the courage to question your own thoughts.

Helplessness can isolate you from the world. It may seem like no one understands, but the truth is: many others feel the same.
